Osijek and Subotica – Partnership for the Development of Family Tourism in the Cross-Border Region

On December 12, 2024, the ZOO Hotel in Osijek hosted the opening conference of the MAJESTIC ZOO-S project. This project, co-funded by the EU through the Interreg IPA Cross-Border Cooperation Program Croatia–Serbia 2021–2027, aims to enhance family tourism in Osijek and Subotica, as well as their zoos.

The conference, attended by more than 70 participants, highlighted the importance of family tourism as a key segment of the global tourism industry. Bojana Vujović, Director of the Palić Zoo, expressed her satisfaction with the collaboration and presented the planned projects for her zoo:
“New facilities, such as the interactive Baby Zoo and an outdoor classroom, will elevate the visitor experience to a higher level. We are especially pleased to offer families unforgettable experiences through these features and to foster empathy in children through interaction with animals.”

Božidarka Golubović from the Subotica Tourist Organization agreed, emphasizing that the project not only opens new opportunities for developing content but also increases the region’s visibility:
“The Majestic ZOO-S project allows Subotica and Osijek to position themselves as desirable family destinations, highlighting the cooperation that contributes to the promotion and improvement of the tourism offerings of both cities.”

Tajana Rogulja, Director of the Osijek Tourist Board, pointed out that such projects contribute to the development of diverse offerings that meet the needs of all family members:
“Family tourism is one of the most important segments of the global tourism sector. A child’s first contact with tourism should be shaped to inspire them to travel later in life, and this project offers just such an opportunity.”

As part of the project, the Palić Zoo will build a modern children’s playground, an interactive Baby Zoo, and a summer classroom equipped with educational materials for schoolchildren. Meanwhile, the Osijek Zoo will renovate its existing playground, add a sensory playground, and create the “Slavonian Village” – an educational space about domestic animals and local traditions. Additionally, the tourist organizations of Osijek and Subotica will organize various promotional activities, including events, fairs, the production of a promotional film, and training for tourism workers based on the “Family Welcome” standards.

After the official program, participants enjoyed a cocktail event, where they exchanged experiences, built new partnerships, and networked. The relaxed atmosphere allowed for further sharing of ideas and collaboration plans. You can view the highlights of the conference in our photo gallery.
