The Cathedral of Saint Teresa of Ávila, affectionately known as the “Great Church,” stands as one of Subotica’s most significant sacred landmarks and a spiritual emblem of the city. It is dedicated to Saint Teresa of Ávila, the patron saint of Subotica, whose image is proudly featured on the city’s official coat of arms.

Constructed between 1773 and 1797 in the Late Baroque and Early Neoclassical styles, the cathedral was designed by the Pesth architect Franz Kaufmann. With its monumental proportions—approximately 61 meters long, 26 meters wide, and featuring a soaring 64-meter clock tower—it dominates the city skyline and remains one of Subotica’s most iconic vistas.

The cathedral’s interior is a sanctuary of valuable artwork. Most of the altarpieces were created in the early 19th century by the Pesth painter József Schöfft, while the magnificent wall compositions were added in the late 19th century, featuring works by Casper Schleibner that give the space a rich, layered artistic character.

Designated a protected cultural monument in 1973, the cathedral was elevated to the status of a basilica minor the following year. Today, it stands as one of the region’s most paramount treasures of sacred architecture and an essential, unmissable stop for every visitor to Subotica.
