The Monument to Ivan Sarić in Subotica honors one of the most prominent aviation pioneers in this part of Europe. Ivan Sarić (1876–1966) was an avid sports enthusiast involved in cycling and motorcycling, but he achieved his greatest fame as a true pioneer of the skies.
In 1910—just seven years after the Wright brothers’ landmark flight—Sarić took off from the Subotica racetrack in an aircraft of his own design, earning his place in history as one of the region’s very first aviators.
Created by sculptor Oto Logo, the monument was erected in 1985 on the eve of the European Women’s Flight Championships, hosted by Subotica’s “Ivan Sarić” Aero Club.
Following its unveiling, the monument became a proud symbol of the city’s rich aviation heritage, serving as the starting line for routes during prestigious pilot competitions. Today, it stands as a cherished landmark commemorating the dawn of aviation in Subotica.
