Unveiled on October 30, 1952, the Monument to the Fallen Fighters and Victims of Fascism stands as one of Subotica’s most significant memorial landmarks. It is a masterpiece by Toma Rosandić, one of the most prominent 20th-century Yugoslav sculptors.
Dedicated to the city’s liberators and the victims of fascism, the monument area also serves as the resting place for distinguished leaders of Subotica’s local workers’ movement and liberation fighters. With its grand scale and harmonious integration into the surrounding square, the memorial stands as a powerful symbol of memory and respect.
At the time of its creation, it was the third monument of its kind in Vojvodina, but the very first to embrace a truly modern design language. Steering clear of theatricality and ideological pathos, Rosandić created a space defined by artistic value and dignified simplicity.
Today, this monument remains a vital landmark of collective memory and a central historical point in Subotica.
